Yesterday walking along an auckland beach a group of bystanders stood worried in a circle around a seal that looked as it were trying to sleep. Three of them had phones out calling Doc, the council and seal rescue. They shooed dogs away and had concerned looks on their faces. They announced they would wait there until the authorities arrived. In stark contrast is the situation of Auckland’s homeless on Victoria st by the casino. Does anyone give them the same sense of caring? Does anyone even look at them? Perhaps if the seal loving crowd at the beach felt the same about our homeless then our world would be very different. My view is that One by One we can help the homeless. If every well heeled seal watching family took one homeless under their wings. Found them food, shelter and even a job then yes protecting a seal is the next logical step. But until that happens maybe less energy and concern for wild animals and more for our fellow humans and neighbours.
